Shane Woolf, M.D.Board Certified Orthopaedic SurgeonSports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Shane Woolf completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at Princeton University in 1994 and then earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1998. He completed residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, then went on to complete a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in Taos, New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Dr. Woolf served as team physician for Highlands University, several high schools in northern New Mexico as well as serving as medical consultant to Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire ski resorts. Dr. Woolf returned to Charleston in 2006 to join the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 2013, he was appointed Chief of Sports Medicine and Medical Director of the Sport Medicine Program and was promoted to Professor in 2020. He was honored to serve in those roles until January 2022, then left MUSC to join the Charleston Sports Medicine from 2022-2023. In 2024, Dr. Woolf co-founded Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Centers and is excited to embark on a new path to deliver excellent, high-quality, patient-focused care in his own practice.

Dr. Woolf is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and holds a certificate of added qualification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Woolf's practice interests include injuries to athletes of all skill levels and ages, with interests in shoulder and knee problems in active and athletic individuals. His clinical practice includes knee and shoulder injuries, rotator cuff disorders, shoulder instability, throwing shoulder injuries, shoulder arthritis and replacement, knee instability, anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL), meniscus tears, and cartilage injury.

Over the past two decades including during training and in practice, Dr. Woolf has provided medical coverage and support as consulting physician to athletes ranging from elite/Olympic level to professional/college level to high school and club sports. Over that time, he has worked with organizations including the Charleston Riverdogs (MiLB), Charleston Battery (USL Championship soccer), South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL hockey), Highlands University, Taos Ski Valley, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Volvo Car Open/Credit One Bank Open tennis tournament, as well as numerous high schools, and other sports programs. Dr. Woolf has also served in the medical pool for the United States Ski and Snowboard Team. He is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association. He is past president of both the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association and the Charleston County Medical Society and currently serves as one of two South Carolina representatives to the AAOS Board of Councilors. He has served as an Assistant Master Instructor at the AAOS/AANA/AOSSM Orthopaedic Learning Center teaching advanced orthopaedics and arthroscopy techniques to the next generation of surgeons.

Dr. Woolf resides in Charleston with his wife and their two amazing children. He loves to be outdoors in the yard or in the woods, fishing, exploring, traveling, skiing, and time with friends and family. He is also passionate about the family’s side business, a table game they created called Kazinga!
